Closing the care gap by enabling bystanders
Professor Tim Nutbeam - Director of IMPACT (The Centre for Post-Collision Research, Innovation and Translation)
Young drivers are more likely than any other group to crash with a car full of friends - so when it goes wrong, the first people on scene are often young people themselves. Drawing on IMPACT's research, Tim will explore the injuries sustained in road collisions, why early care matters and the gap before professional help arrives. He'll look at what bystanders can contribute, the barriers to helping, and how we can give young people the knowledge, confidence and support to act. He'll close with a question for the room: could enabling young people to help after a collision also engage them with the consequences of driving?
Tim directs IMPACT. An emergency and prehospital emergency medicine consultant working in Plymouth and with Devon Air Ambulance, his research focuses on improving care and outcomes after road collisions.
